Abilities Unlimited is honored to coordinate a self-advocacy support group of individuals within the greater Westfield area who seek a greater knowledge of personal abilities, increased opportunities for enhancing their lives, and a greater ability to control their choices and decisions. Self-advocacy is a process of growth for the individual and the support group.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • an evaluation and determination by the Department of Mental Retardation
  • at least 18 years of age

Activities of the group include:

  • monthly meetings
  • advocacy discussions and planning related to discrimination, housing, jobs, legislation and other self-selected topics
  • social events, such as, dances, parties, outings, etc.
  • trainings, such as, organizational development, leadership skills, self advocacy opportunities, role playing activities, communication skills, Human Rights workshops, etc.
  • contacts with other self-advocacy groups in the region, as well as the Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong and national organizations
  • participation in conferences and workshops

Funding is provided by the Department of Mental Retardation, grant writing, and fund raising activities.
